Suboxone is a prescription medication used primarily to treat opioid dependence (opioid use disorder). It contains two active ingredients:

Buprenorphine – a partial opioid agonist, which means it activates opioid receptors in the brain but to a much lesser degree than full opioids like heroin or oxycodone. This helps reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the intense high of full opioids.
Naloxone – an opioid antagonist, included to discourage misuse. If Suboxone is taken as prescribed (sublingually or under the tongue), naloxone has little effect. But if someone tries to inject it, naloxone can precipitate withdrawal symptoms, acting as a deterrent.
Key Points:
Form: Usually comes as a sublingual film or tablet.
Purpose: Helps people reduce or quit their use of opioids.
Used in: Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs, often combined with counseling and behavioral therapies.
Side Effects: Can include headache, nausea, constipation, sweating, insomnia, and in some cases, respiratory depression if misused.
